iTunes no longer sells it's music with copy protection but for those of us who have purchased music in the past all our music does have this little gem called DRM or otherwise known as copy protection. Of course since iTunes has stopped this policy it has offered it's customers the opportunity to repurchase their music again without DRM attached at a much reduced price of course (how good of Apple to let us buy our music from them twice) Well, you don't have to. In the event that you would like to listen to any music purchased from iTunes on any device other than a iPod, here's a quick and easy way of removing DRM without having to take Apple up on their generous offer (and at the same time lining their pockets twice).
All you need are some CD's and a CD burner. - Open iTunes and select the songs that you wish to remove the DRM from.
- Burn those songs to a CD in Audio format. This is important. You must burn a music CD. Burning a data disk will not work. (Correction Made To Article - In an earlier post I said to burn your music in MP3 format - although this will it work will talk considerably longer)
- Once the disk has been burned, copy the music back into your iTunes library. The music is now DRM free and free to be used on other music devices.
The process of burning the songs to the disk removes the copy protection. Another option is to purchase the songs without copy protection in the first place. iTunes now sell all their music DRM free but a cheaper alternative is Amazon's MP3 service.
